Advent in Vienna

During this magical time of the year the entire city transforms itself into a huge ballroom and you can see chandeliers decorating the streets of Vienna. White lights sparkle from everywhere you look and roasted chestnuts being sold at many street corners.

One of the big attractions during Advent are the Christmas markets, where you can find little handmade treasures for your Christmas tree, each item lovingly made. And of course you must try one of the many flavours of mulled wine which will warm you during these crisps cold days.

A big tradition is serving home made Christmas biscuits, the bigger the variety the better and it sometimes feels a bit of a competition amongst bakers. Vanillekipferl, is a wonderful combination of vanilla, sugar and shortcrust biscuit in a small crescent shape and can simply not be missed on any table. Linzer Stangerl, 2 light biscuits sandwiched together with jam and dunked into chocolate, coconut kisses and Zimtsterne (cinnamon stars) are all favourites and will remind you of Christmas with every bit you take.
